Institutional Giving Manager

New Door Ventures is an early intervention employment and education program for high-potential transition-age youth (TAY) ages 16-24 who reside in Bay Area communities facing elevated levels of youth disconnection, socioeconomic challenges, and community stress.

Founded in 1981, New Door Ventures was born out of the belief that by providing resources for youth to build foundational education and job skills, personal support, mentorship, and pathways to higher education and career opportunities, these young people can experience greater success in adulthood. Our strategies provide educational and economic mobility for TAY facing significant barriers to obtaining and retaining unsubsidized employment, empowering youth make successful transitions to adulthoods marked by economic independence and engagement with their community.

Since 2005, we have served more than 5,000 YAT and directly employed over 2,700, through our workforce readiness programs with demonstrable long-term impact. According to California’s Employment Development Department (EDD), 74% of our program graduates are employed 3 years after program exit — significantly higher than youth who began but did not complete the program (52%) and all California youth ages 16-24 (40%). EDD wage data also demonstrates that youth who completed our program have higher average annual earnings of 40% one year after program completion and 200% two years after program completion than the year prior to entering the program.

We are hiring a full-time Institutional Giving Manager to support our Development Team.

About the Opportunity:

The Institutional Giving Manager has strong grant writing skills and is responsible for managing and implementing fundraising activities focused on securing grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies. They work closely with program staff to identify funding opportunities and develop compelling proposals that meet the needs and priorities of potential funders

This role is exempt and is located primarily on-site at New Door’s San Francisco location. The typical workweek is 40 hours, but some evening and weekend work may be required to attend meetings and events. Currently, New Door Ventures employs a hybrid work location policy, with a 3:2 office/remote cadence.

New Door’s spacious three-story headquarters in the Mission District of San Francisco is a comfortable, welcoming space, equipped to keep staff and clients protected from transmission of infectious disease. Office space is open-plan and shared with a collaborative, respectful team. The position may require occasional travel to meet with donors or attend conferences.

What Success Looks Like:

  • Grant Writing: Successful completion of compelling, clear, and concise grant proposals that effectively communicate the organization’s mission, programs, and impact to potential funders
  • Research: A robust pipeline of potential funding sources with well researched giving history, interests, and priorities to create targeted proposals
  • Project Management: Successful management of multiple grant proposals and deadlines
  • Communication: Effective communication of the organization’s mission, goals, and impact to potential funders and to maintain ongoing relationships with existing funders
  • Strategic Thinking: With a focus on the organization’s funding needs, create strategic long-term plans for securing funding from a variety of source
  • Collaboration: Effective collaboration with program staff to identify funding needs, develop program plans, and ensure that grant proposals are aligned with program priorities
  • Attention to detail: Detail-oriented and able to manage budgets, track expenses, and ensure that all grant applications and reports are properly documented and recorded
  • Flexibility: Adaptable and able to pivot quickly in response to changing circumstances or unexpected challenges, understanding the rapidly shifting grant landscape

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and own a growing portfolio of foundations and corporations to support the organization’s planned growth year over year.
  • Conduct research to identify new funding sources and stay informed about trends and changes in the institutional giving landscape
  • Write grant proposals and reports that effectively communicate our organization’s impact and funding needs
  • Submit high-quality reports, proposals, and other external-facing documents.

Donor Relations

  • Represent the organization at meetings, conferences, and other events related to institutional giving
  • Manage and maintain relationships with institutional donors, including regular communication, cultivation, and stewardship activities
  • Work with the development team to ensure that all institutional giving activities are integrated with other fundraising and communication strategies
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure that grant proposals and reports accurately reflect the organization’s programs and services

 Project Management

  • Project management of multiple grant applications, foundation giving cycles, proposal and reporting dates, and report requirements
  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure that grant proposals and reports accurately reflect the organization’s programs and services
  • Prepare budgets and financial reports for grant proposals and reports
  • Assist with Board of Directors as needed

Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications & Skills: 

  • The equivalent of, or a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a related area to social field (such as nonprofit management, fundraising, communications, or business)
  • 3-5 years’ experience in institutional fundraising, with a track record of securing significant grants and building strong relationships with donors
  • Knowledge of and experience with government grant proposals and processes
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling proposals and reports that clearly convey complex information
  • Strong project management skills, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Experience working collaboratively with program staff and senior leadership
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the organization, and a passion for nonprofit work

Compensation

The Institutional Giving Manager will earn a starting salary of $88,100, depending on experience. Compensation is reviewed annually. New Door offers a generous benefits package including medical, dental, vision, commuter benefits, matched 403(b) retirement savings plan, tuition support, and PTO of 8+ weeks in the first year including 13 vacation days, ~10 sick days, 13.5 company holidays, and a year-end company rest period of 5 days.
