Major Gift Officer

CatchLight seeks a Major Gift Officer who is responsible for cultivating and managing its individual giving programs including its major gift program. This is someone eager to expand CatchLight’s individual giving programs to meet growing annual goals, with the insight contribute to the strategic plan to ensure we meet and beat annual and multi year goals for individual giving, and with experience in identifying and cultivating prospects who are invested in topics including journalism, photography, art, and a healthy democracy.

This position reports to the Director of Development.


Lead individual giving efforts overall, with a focus on major gifts. Work with the Director of Development, CEO, VP of Development and Public Programs, and Board members to expand individual giving by 25%-33% year over year.

• Qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward portfolio of individual major gift prospects/donors

• Steward existing major donors and identify prospects to move up or who are poised to make their first gift.

• Identify and execute avenues to connect with new prospects and deepen the connection with existing donors.

• Identify stories, experiences, or other opportunities that will be compelling for major donors and prospects.

• Maintain and track major donor activities to ensure annual goals will be met:

• Maintain accurate and up to date donor records. Use CRM to track all activity. Communicate outcomes with CL staff regularly.

• Track KPIs, including: Amount solicited, amount raised, number of asks, number of gifts, retention rate, number of new donors, and average gift size.

• Track activities including: Number of visits, phone calls, emails, gifts, and other stewardship activities

• At least 2 years of development or major gifts experience.

• Superior verbal and written skills with experience producing proposals, presentations, etc.

• Self starter; ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize tasks, and see them through to completion.

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a small team.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and “can do” attitude.

• Ability to communicate via phone, text, zoom, email and other software

• Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time

• CatchLight has a hybrid work environment with shared workspace, must be willing to travel to the San Francisco office every Thursday and Tuesday, or as necessary.

• Must be willing to travel to meet with donors as necessary. Mileage and direct expenses will be reimbursed.

The salary for this position is $75,000-85,000, commensurate with experience.
